Viscous Bodies
On Opacity, Contact & Queer Relationality
Viscous Bodies invites Berlin-based BIPOC Queer artists to submit works that inhabit density, friction, sensuality, and refusal.
We depart from the metaphor of separation, from binaries that insist on incompatibility, and instead turn toward viscosity: thickness, slowness, resistance, contact. Viscosity alters movement. It complicates clarity. It refuses clean division.
This exhibition approaches queerness not as identity to be displayed, but as a method, a way of arranging space, material, and relation. Drawing inspiration from the right to opacity articulated by Édouard Glissant, the queer horizon imagined by José Esteban Muñoz, and the erotic as power proposed by Audre Lorde, Viscous Bodies centres practices that resist over-translation and decline simplification.
We are not looking for an explanation.
We are looking for worlds.
What We Seek
We are interested in works that:
Embrace opacity over transparency
Treat softness as strength
Explore abstraction as survival
Engage ritual, spirituality, sensuality, and pleasure
Resist institutional legibility
Hold contradiction without resolving it
We are especially drawn to practices that understand relation as material; how bodies meet, repel, merge, suspend, and transform within space.
