Jay Brown
The cultural organisation "Lijiang Studio" was founded in 2005 on the premises of a farming community near Lijiang in the south-west of Yunnan province. It is an experimental art space, mainly based on a residency programme that regularly invites local, Chinese and international artists with a focus on India, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.
Working at "Lijiang Studio", artists are expected to experiment with alternative art practises. Joint projects in the public space, also together with the rural people of the region, raise questions regarding personal positions and behaviour as well as the art system in China in general. Jay Brown therefore describes the organisation as being "experimental in a very basic sense".
