In the 1920s, the Meisterhaus Ensemble in Dessau became the epitome of the artists' colony of the 20th century. House to house, door to door, Walter Gropius, Oskar Schlemmer, Georg Muche, László Moholy-Nagy, Lyonel Feininger, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee lived here with their families. They were joined by friends and guests. Artist collectives, artist couples, artist friendships emerged, working together in the open structure of the model houses placed in the park. With the departure of the Bauhäusler in 1933, however, the area became deserted; artistic production ceased.
Since February 2016, the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation has made it possible for young international artists to live and work in the Muche/ Schlemmer semi-detached house again for the first time in 90 years - even though the monument preservation requirements are high due to its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With this new format, the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation would like to promote the current, exploratory examination of the Bauhaus, revive the Meisterhaus ensemble and, in this context, promote artistic-creative works of international significance, which will finally be shown in Haus Gropius until the Bauhaus anniversary in 2019.
