Every year, the Kunstverein zu Rostock announces three residency scholarships for the Schleswig-Holstein-Haus for which visual artists can apply. The scholarship holders are selected by a jury of experts. They receive a monthly grant of 1,500 euros, a working studio and a living space in the Schleswig-Holstein-Haus Rostock. The duration of the residency is 2 - 4 months.
The Schleswig-Holstein House is located in the Eastern Old Town and houses not only the guest studio but also the gallery of the Kunstverein zu Rostock. The scholarship holders from Germany and the foreign partner cities appreciate the residential studio with its two spacious workrooms as a place that allows concentrated work in a quiet environment. Rostock is one of the few municipalities in Germany with an independent scholarship programme. The scholarship programme was founded in 1995 on the occasion of the renovation of a listed house in the Eastern Old Town, financed with funds from the Ministries of the Interior of the states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein. In 2023, the Hanseatic and University City of Rostock handed over the organisation and supervision of the scholarship to the Kunstverein zu Rostock.

The scholarship holders are invited to present their works to the public in the context of "Open Studios". In addition, they are given the opportunity to take part in a biennial exhibition in the gallery of the Kunstverein zu Rostock.
