Founded in 1986, the international fellowship house Künstlerhaus Lauenburg has been awarding residency fellowships lasting several months in the fields of contemporary visual arts, literature and composition for almost 40 years. In addition, the house awards a working scholarship for artists with children and a fellowship by invitation. Situated on the banks of the Elbe River, international artists* live and work in Lauenburg/Elbe between May and September. During the rest of the year, the studios are rented out to freelance artists. The Künstlerhaus Lauenburg is a unique place for the promotion of artists and for encounters; a meeting place where various contemporary arts can be experienced by a supra-regional audience. Exhibitions, readings, concerts and artists' talks enable direct encounters and discussions with artists from different backgrounds and disciplines. Four residential studios, gallery spaces and temporarily used rooms in the historic old town and modern upper town offer a wide range of possibilities for work and presentation.
With over 600 sqm of floor space, the Künstlerhaus Lauenburg has four spacious studios (one with printing press) and living rooms (with kitchen and bath room), a foyer for events, a small fellowship library with computer workstation and a terrace directly on the Elbe.
In the annexe of the Künstlerhaus Lauenburg fellowship holders' residence at Elbstraße 52, extensive renovation and modernisation measures were carried out in 2021 to create additional modern exhibition spaces, which, in keeping with the cultural mission of the Künstlerhaus Lauenburg, present an ambitious contemporary exhibition programme.Due to its direct proximity and shared premises with the scholarship holders' residence, the Stadtgalerie Künstlerhaus Lauenburg (City Gallery) is anchored directly at the site of art production. It serves as a field of experimentation within the institutional framework and offers a platform not only for the scholarship holders but also for other current positions.
close to Hamburg, by train via Bücher or Lüneburg
The Künstlerhaus Lauenburg is characterized by its individual support and the networking of the scholarship holders among each other. It also promotes the networking of the fellows with the cultural scene of the Hamburg metropolitan region and Schleswig-Holstein.
During their stay at the Künstlerhaus, the fellows are expected to participate in and create a closing event like exhibition, reading or concert. Additional events are possible.
We are working to improve the selection process in terms of fairer access and empowerment of the discriminated*.
