All over the world, artists represent positions on political and social issues. Through their commitment to freedom of the mind, they make a valuable contribution to the development and preservation of democracy and human rights. The Heinrich Böll Foundation supports this commitment through its scholarship programme in cooperation with the city of Düren.

In cooperation with the city of Düren and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, it has been possible to invite almost 150 guests from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe since the Heinrich Böll House Langenbroich e.V. was founded in 1989. The house, acquired by the Böll family in the 1960s, became a quiet place of work and exchange for artists from all over the world.

The Heinrich Böll House Langenbroich is part of an international network of institutions that support politically persecuted authors.

The duration of the scholarships is usually four months, the amount of support is 1250 euros per month. Preference is given to artists whose work is hindered or even prevented in their countries, mostly for political reasons.
