THE HANSEATIC CITY OF STADE – A PLACE WHERE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE MEET

The Hanseatic city of Stade is located in the heart of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. In many ways, it brings together past, present, and future. Alongside its picturesque old town surrounding the historic Hanseatic harbor — whose maritime heritage plays a vital role for the city — Stade is also a center of research and innovation.

Now, with a new initiative to support emerging visual artists, another building block is being added. The setting for this endeavor is a converted Alster barge, moored right next to the Schwedenspeicher Museum in Stade’s historic Hanseatic harbor. The barge has been transformed into a residential vessel.
The Berlin-based artist duo 44flavours has designed the ship’s exterior. This special place will now be made available to artists for two months each year as a space to live and work. It is meant to serve as a source of inspiration and a place for research. The ship itself offers a variety of working possibilities. Additionally, in coordination with the Stade museums, artists will have access to the museum workshops as shared studio spaces. This opens up a wide range of options for shaping the two-month stay in Stade.
There are no strict thematic requirements for the residency, although we would naturally be delighted if the resulting work engages with the residency location in some way.

There is an opportunity to present works either as a work in progress or as a final exhibition in the Town Hall of the Hanseatic City of Stade. We also provide a production grant of up to €1,500 to support the creation of a publication as part of the residency. The format of this publication is completely open.
To cover living expenses during the residency, a monthly stipend of €1,500 will be provided. Accommodation aboard the KUNSTKUDDER art ship is included free of charge as part of the residency. In general, artists should be willing to actively engage in public outreach during their stay, including participation on social media.
